Sprint Epic 4G update delayed by 'administrative issues,' consumer rage released on schedule

And this, folks, is a lesson of what not to do if you're a major carrier with a majorly perturbed user base. In a way, this sort of feels like the Instinct update debacle all over again, with users claiming that a promised software update was being held beyond the 30 day return window in order to keep contracts alive. 24 hours after a Sprint forum administrator proudly proclaimed that a long-awaited Epic 4G software update was rolling out over the next few days, another admin has chimed in with a nearly-audible "sike!" Rather than letting users cheer its hard work over the weekend, Epic 4G owners are now being told that "administrative issues" are to blame for a new delay -- a delay that'll stretch on for an undetermined amount of time, to boot. Oh, and back on the topic of what not to do, the operator's forum admin has also thrown a jab at all of you out there that would even think of accusing Sprint of pushing this update beyond the 30 day return window. Look, we all know it's a baseless conspiracy theory, but there's really no need to get feisty, is there? Full announcement is after the break.

Update: Looks as if the update is out there if you're brave enough to do it yourself. But honestly, is it worth it? Probably.

Josh invades Late Night studio with flying robot army of one (video)

Lest you weren't glued to your television sets last night, our own Josh Topolsky raised quite a bit of mayhem on Jimmy Fallon's Late Night show. After doing the professional thing and showing off the minuscule Apple TV and Roku XDS media streamers, Josh proceeded to power up an AR.Drone quadricopter and fly it around the studio in a decidedly menacing fashion. For video of Jimmy's courageous reaction and the fallout from this robot invasion, jump past the break.

Notepad++ 5.8.1 now out, with upgraded Scintilla editor component

Notepad++ is a great open source text editor. In addition to being open source, it's extensible and incredibly nimble for a beast of its power. I often use Java-based jEdit or XUL-based Komodo Edit, and compared to those two, Notepad++ is blazing fast.
The Notepad++ team released 5.8 a short while ago, but it was worth holding out on the upgrade -- because they've now released 5.8.1 with a couple of important bug fixes. The most important feature for 5.8 is that Scintilla, the open source text editor component that Notepad++ uses, was upgraded to the most recent release (2.21).
There are also two new line wrapping methods added, enhanced macro capabilities, and many other incremental improvements. If you use Notepad++, now would be a good time to kick the tires on this new release.Notepad++ 5.8.1 now out, with upgraded Scintilla editor component originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 17:30:00 EST. New Chrome Extension Adds Your Evernotes To Google Search Results

At TechCrunch Disrupt, Google's CEO Eric Schmidt told the audience that the next step for Google Search is to show more personalized results. It's unclear when Google will roll out a more personalized search experience, but startup Evernote, the ?memory enhancement? service that allows one to capture, organize, and find information across multiple devices and platforms, is hoping to bring this to you now. The startup is releasing a new Google Chrome Extension that includes Simultaneous Search, which lets you search both Google and your Evernote account at the same time.

Here's how it works. When you beginning typing your Google search, your Evernote notes will also show as a result on top of your Google search result. Evernote will also show you the number of notes that match your query; and you can click on the result to see a list of all your notes that matched the search. Evernote says the extension also works on other Google search portals, including Google Images and Google Shopping. And the startup is planning to expand this functionality to other search engines and browsers.

Crapgadget: 'cubicle shoot-out' edition

This crapgadget installment features things that would get you immediately fired from most right-thinking American corporations, HR Department be damned. Seriously: if Morty over in Accounts Receivable ever rolls into work with a USB fan tie, fingerless USB powered hand-warmin' gloves (or, failing that, a mouse that also heats up), or starts fussing over the goldfish in his desktop USB aquarium, it's time to start working out escape routes (or at least look forward to a mention in a revised edition of Mark Ames's Going Postal). But what about the landline telephone shaped like a large set of lips? Oh, that one's totally awesome.
