IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison
A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top -- though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn't necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11's case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.
But what we'd really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test...IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 07:30:00 EST. Firefox 4 Mobile officially released for Android and Maemo devices
Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that's designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week's use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC's release.
While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it's definitely worth trying out if you're still using Android's stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.
Over the next few days we'll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.Continue reading Firefox 4 Mobile officially released for Android and Maemo devicesFirefox 4 Mobile officially released for Android and Maemo devices originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 11:40:00 EST. March 31 is World Backup Day 2011
On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you've ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you'll know that it's a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you've never backed up your important files -- or if you only back up sporadically -- do it on World Backup Day!
It's not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there's always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don't forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools -- $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.
For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.March 31 is World Backup Day 2011 originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 07:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Xcom Global's international MiFi rentals getting cheaper, Eurotrips making a comeback
The company has informed us that it'll be previewing "membership pricing" starting next month, giving consumers the ability to pick up a MiFi for $14.95 per day or a USB WWAN dongle for $12.95 per day. The real story, however, is this: second MiFis for two-country itineraries will no longer incur an additional fee, and if you're setting out on a bona fide Eurotrip, every MiFi beyond that will ring up as a flat $30 fee regardless of trip length. We're told that the pricing scheme will be fully revealed in June, and that it's a permanent endeavor as opposed to a trial run. Membership itself will also be free, and while we're still holding out hope that Xcom can nail down a global MiFi solution, these pricing tweaks will certainly make it easy to nation-hop while across the pond.Xcom Global's international MiFi rentals getting cheaper, Eurotrips making a comeback originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 10:00:00 EDT. OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows
OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).
I'm of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it's beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?
OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing -- in case something like WriteMonkey's dark background is just too oppressive for you.
After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter's features and creative soundscapes.Continue reading OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to WindowsOmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 13:00:00 EST. Aziz Ansari Shares Advice For MTV Movie Awards Host Jason Sudeikis
Aziz Ansari onstage during the 2010 MTV Movie Awards
Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic
It's official, boys and girls, "Saturday Night Live" star Jason Sudeikis is set to host the MTV Movie Awards when the show goes live June 5 from Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. Who will win Golden Popcorn statues? What kind of zany antics will go down? Nobody really knows, but one guy who understands what it's like to host the show is 2010 emcee and "Parks and Recreation" star Aziz Ansari.
So, what words of wisdom does Mr. Ansari have for Sudeikis nearly 12 months after his stint? "It's so much work, so definitely have a lot of uppers on hand, like just drugs that'll get you fired up," he joked to MTV News. "PCP is good to stay up all night, get all the work done. It's a cool thing though; it's back in vogue. It's like Twitter, PCP. It's like trendy things: Twitter, PCP, Jonas Brothers."
While we're not sure he'll take Ansari's advice, Sudeikis has made it clear he hopes to do a bang-up job. "I'm sincerely flattered that the folks from the Mostly Teenage Viewers network have invited me to host this year, and I look forward to keeping the streak of flawless and critically lauded Movie Awards show hosting in 2011 alive," Sudeikis joked.
The MTV Movie Awards nominees — based on your votes at MovieAwards.MTV.com — will be announced Tuesday, at which point you'll be able to vote for your favorite films and stars in categories like Best Fight, Best Kiss, Biggest Badass Star, Best Villain and, of course, Best Movie. Voting will continue through June 4, though Best Movie will remain open throughout the live ceremony June 5 — meaning you'll have a chance to affect the night's biggest prize until the very last minute.

Usher To Donate Gadhafi Money To Charity
Usher (file)
Photo: Getty Images
R&B superstar Usher announced Friday (March 4) that he was donating to various charities proceeds from appearing at a private event at St. Barts linked to Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, according to a statement made to the Associated Press.
The Grammy award winner's renouncement comes after similar announcements from singers Mariah Carey, Nelly Furtado, and Beyoncé, all of whom were revealed to have performed at private concerts linked to the Middle Eastern leader, who has faced open revolt and major political uprisings since February.
"I am sincerely troubled to learn about the circumstances surrounding the Nikki Beach St. Bart's event that took place on New Year's Eve 2009," Usher said of the concert, at which he appeared alongside Beyoncé but did not perform. "I will be donating all of my personal proceeds from that event to various human rights organizations."
Usher has already begun the process, having made a donation to Amnesty International, the AP reports. The exact size of the donation is not known.
The New Year's Eve gig was reportedly for Moammar's fourth son Muastassim, who an unnamed music industry source told MTV News has a history of throwing lavish parties "jammed" with supermodels.
Beyoncé, who sang at the event, donated all proceeds from her performance to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, established in the wake of the Haitian earthquake.
"All monies paid to Beyoncé for her performance at a private party at Nikki Beach St. Barts on New Year's Eve 2009, including the commissions paid to her booking agency, were donated to the earthquake relief efforts for Haiti over a year ago," the "Halo" singer's publicist said in a statement to The Huffington Post. "Once it became known that the third-party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause."
Singer Nelly Furtado tweeted February 28 that she plans to make similar amends.
"In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Gadhafi clan to perform a 45 min. show for guests at a hotel in Italy," she tweeted. "I am going to donate the $."
The leader of Libya since a successful military coup in 1969, Gadhafi has reportedly lost control of much of his country as a result of widespread uprisings. The United Nations voted unanimously to refer the dictator to the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

ElvisBlog News -- 4/28/11
No Post Last Weekend:
Since I started ElvisBlog back in 2005, I have tried to consistently post a new article each weekend. Blog tutorials all declared that a regular schedule was necessary to keep readers happy and coming back. During the first six years, the only time I missed a post was when my wife had open-heart surgery in 2009. Well, now it has happened twice. A rogue virus got into my laptop and screwed up everything. It took two trips to the Geek Squad at Best Buys and $280 to get it fixed, and I was without my laptop for ten days. So, I?m real sorry if you checked into ElvisBlog recently and found nothing new, but now you know the reason.
Two Million Hits:
Last April I was happy to announce that ElvisBlog had reached one million hits (total page views). It took five years and two months to reach that level. Now, twelve months later, ElvisBlog has passed two million hits. Thanks to all you readers for making this happen. I appreciate your support.
New Logo, Tag Line and Banner:
Over the years, there have been numerous references in ElvisBlog to the famous Elvis lip curl. One article last February showed several artists? interpretations of the Elvis snarl, and that got me fascinated with the image. So, I utilized the considerable talents of graphic designer Carol Stevens to come up a really distinctive Elvis lip curl. She did such a terrific job I decided to use it as a logo for Elvisblog.
At the same time, I have been considering changing the tag-line for the blog. The original ?A Weekly Column of News, History and Commentary about Elvis Presley? seemed too stuffy. The subjects of my posts have trended more to the fun side, celebrating Elvis as a pop culture icon. So, I decided a better tag-line would be: ?All the Cool Stuff Out There in Elvis World.?
With both a new logo and a new tag-line, it was time to change the banner at the top of the ElvisBlog home page. This is the first time it has appeared, and I hope you like it.

Adblock Plus developer pokes holes in Mozilla's new add-on performance tests
Rather surprisingly, it turns out that Mozilla's numbers could be significantly wrong -- and if they're not wrong, the factors that Mozilla uses to tabulate an add-ons final score should definitely be made more transparent.
In the first set of tests, Palant shows that FlashGot's position in the top 10 is probably due to a fault in Mozilla's testing setup, and that add-ons can perform very differently depending on which operating system they're being tested on. In the second analysis, Palant uncovers an irregularity that doesn't seem to have an obvious cause -- but it could be due to an I/O bottleneck on Mozilla's test machines. Basically, even though performance testing of Read It Later is disabled because of a bug, it still (somehow!) manages to record a 14% slow-down on Windows 7.
Palant concludes both analyses by scolding Mozilla for going public with the performance data before its testing methods had been confirmed accurate. It definitely looks like Mozilla has been more than a little reckless, considering the importance of Firefox's add-on ecosystem.Adblock Plus developer pokes holes in Mozilla's new add-on performance tests originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 05:20:00 EST. Survival Lab is a fun pixelated game where dying doesn't matter
For each donut-like yellow thing you pick up, you gain a bit of experience. If you manage to collect several in a row without getting hit, this counts as a combo. You can see my mad combo skills in the screenshot, of course. Collecting combos is a good thing, because a ten-point combo gives you for more experience than just collecting ten dounts one by one (getting hit in-between).
Having experience is useful, because once you die, you get to a screen where you can upgrade your skills. You can learn to run faster, double-jump (and then double-jump higher), and duck. You can also gain more armour so that getting hit won't kill you so quickly.
What makes this simple game so addictive is that when you die, your experience doesn't reset. You just go back to the same level, or another level of your choosing, and keep accumulating more and more experience. Lots of fun, especially if you're into the whole retro-gaming thing.Survival Lab is a fun pixelated game where dying doesn't matter originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 16:20:00 EST. PlaceIQ?s Location-Aware Advertising Can Target You Block By Block
Mobile advertising inventory still goes largely unfilled because the relevance and targeting isn't that good. PlaceIQ sifts through tons of data about locations to give marketers a mini-zipcode-like profile of each block. The data comes from both open sources and commercial data sets, including place data, retail data, government data, event data, photo data, social data, and, crime data. This goes well beyond Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare, but the company says it doesn't use any personally identifiable information. Rather, it is making assumptions based on the contextual cues of a person's location and time of day.

Torus is an impressive 3D Tetris game powered by HTML5
You rotate the ring itself with the arrow keys, while a Tetris-like piece slowly (excruciatingly slowly, in fact) descends from the top. As soon as you make a solid line, it disappears.
Not all pieces are Tetris-like; some of them wouldn't really work with a regular Tetris game but are a good fit for Torus' 3D format.
Torus is ideal for playing at the office, because it has absolutely no soundtrack. The game is dead-quiet. It's also very very slow (slow enough for me to mention it twice in one post) so you can safely look away for a moment and then keep playing. Also, as soon as the game loses focus, it automatically pauses.
Bottom line: It's an impressive demo of the power of HTML5; if it were a bit faster, it would have some serious addictive potential.Torus is an impressive 3D Tetris game powered by HTML5 originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 17:30:00 EST. SPOTTED: Beyonce Almost Falls Out Of Her Jumpsuit In Paris
Pics of Bey still maintaining her fabulosity when you read on....
Mrs. Carter's been keeping things pretty sexy and revealing lately. So yesterday was no different as she slipped into this hot Roland Muret jumpsuit. Too bad the sticky tape on the sides of her bust wasn't enough to hold in the side boobage.
I mean, we've def seen worse wardrobe malfunctions, so we doubt she was traumatized. She looks hot--uncombed weave and all-- nonetheless.
By the way, reportedly Beyonce is in the City of Light to not only shoot her Harper's Bazaar spread, but to work on her next single with Kanye West--and maybe even the video. Nice!

Inhabitat's Week in Green: solar panel roads, floating golf, and the 2,564.8 MPG race car
Building technology got a tremendous boost this week as Inhabitat reported on a new type of graphene super paper that is 10 times stronger than steel and six times as light. We also took a look at several remarkable new infrastructure projects popping up around the world - from a self-sufficient floating golf course in the Maldives to London's gleaming new cable car system, to the Netherlands' plan to supercharge its roadways with solar panels.
Speaking of hot asphalt, this week the ultra-efficient Alerion race car blazed a trail at the Shell Eco-Marathon, clocking in an incredible 2,564.8 miles per gallon. Meanwhile, Fisker announced that its sexy electric Karma sedan will hit the road this summer, and we were surprised to hear that Marcelo da Luz was forced to pull his solar-powered X of 1 car across Ontario due to road regulations. The New York Auto Show also kicked off with a blast this week as Lexus unveiled its next-gen LF-Gh concept hybrid and Porsche rolled out a 911 GTR 3 in a Facebook colorway that got a lot of "likes".
Finally, we looked at several futuristic example of wearable technology this week including a pair of RoboCop-like glasses that are capable of scanning 400 faces per second at public events. We also brought you a brilliant LED backpack that lets cyclists send signals to drivers, a pollution-detecting t-shirt, and a clock that tells time by knitting a new scarf every year.Inhabitat's Week in Green: solar panel roads, floating golf, and the 2,564.8 MPG race car originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 24 Apr 2011 21:30:00 EDT.
