Firefox 4 for Mobile RC released, hints of new badge-collecting social game Firefox Spark
Moving away from the beta builds, this RC is more of a stability and spit-polish release than anything else. Usability-wise, the release notes point out that there are now 150 add-ons that work with Firefox 4 for Mobile, up from 100 last month -- and there's now a Form Assistant, which should make logging into websites a lot easier, especially if you have Firefox Sync enabled.
The most significant change is that the now-infamous checkerboarding from page rendering and scrolling is now a lot less prevalent, thanks to smarter rendering and page loading algorithms. Likewise, JavaScript performance has apparently been improved, but we haven't had a chance to confirm it yet. There's a promotional video from Mozilla that demonstrates Firefox 4 for Mobile after the break.
Finally, the RC contains a link to Firefox Spark, a new badge-collecting website, which seems to be one of Firefox 4 for Android's 'launch goodies.' As far as we know, Firefox Spark will be a social game, where you share the Firefox for Android download link, collect badges, and level up. We're not sure of the exact details yet, though.
Grab Firefox 4 for Android from the Market or download the Maemo version.Continue reading Firefox 4 for Mobile RC released, hints of new badge-collecting social game Firefox SparkFirefox 4 for Mobile RC released, hints of new badge-collecting social game Firefox Spark originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 06:45:00 EST. Help Bob make money in Sticks, a fun physics game
Then, on his way back home from another grueling day at the office, he passes a huge sign which says "Sticks." This is where the game starts.
Each level has a number of coins hovering in mid-air, and your goal is to place sticks that lead those coins to Bob -- but you only have a limited amount of wood to play with. As soon as you're done placing your sticks strategically, hit the big Play button and let nature, or rather gravity, run its course. The coins will drop down, and if you place your sticks correctly, they will roll all the way to Bob.
The soundtrack is soothing and playful, and didn't get on my nerves even after playing for quite a while. All in all, a very cute game, especially for a day at the office.Help Bob make money in Sticks, a fun physics game originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 17:00:00 EST. GNU Project begins work on totally free Skype alternative
Dubbed GNU Free Call, the program will rely on a "self-aware, meshed calling network" to deliver secure, anonymous VoIP. The GNU SIP Witch server will provide the back end, which will be extended to communicate with peers and cache routing information.
The aim is to deliver a cross-platform experience, so smartphone clients are in the work as well -- and with this being a GNU project, the open-source Android is a likely target. Other platforms which don't play as well with FSF and GNU licensing probably won't get in on the action.GNU Project begins work on totally free Skype alternative originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 08:00:00 EST. Dodge is a space-shooter in which you have no weapons
Your vector-looking spacecraft is the fastest thing on the screen, most of the time. And as the header implies, you have absolutely no weapons; you can't get any, either. All you have is agility and maneuverability.
Your opponents shoot heat-seeking missiles at you; the missiles lock on and start tracking you. The trick is to dodge the missiles while putting them in the path of one of your enemies, thus letting them have a taste of their own medicine.
There are three types of enemies, at least in the first few levels: "simple" spaceships which fire slow projectiles, "tanks" which seem to be more serious and take more hits to destroy, and "circles." The circles simply explode, spewing twenty or thirty very fast projectiles. This sounds dangerous, but is actually great once you learn to use them; they are very destructive for tanks, and can even blow up other circles.
The soundtrack is very techno, but it meshes very well with this type of game. Intense fun!Dodge is a space-shooter in which you have no weapons originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 01 Mar 2011 17:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Britney Spears' 'Till The World Ends' Hits Web
Photo: Jive
Britney Spears' new single, "Till the World Ends," sounds poised to be a club smash. The Ke$ha-written, Dr. Luke/Max Martin-produced track was posted by Perez Hilton on Thursday afternoon (March 3), after speculation earlier in the day that the song would hit radio next week.
"Till the World Ends" is a swirling, "beat the beat" track, ready for late nights spent "dancing till the world ends" as she sings on the fast-paced party jam. "This kitten got your tongue tied in knots I see/ Spit it out 'cause I'm dying for company," a confident Spears purrs.
As the song slows for a moment — during a break before she moves her way to the chorus — she sings, "I can't take it take it take no more/ Never felt like felt like this before/ Come on get me get me on the floor/ DJ, what you what you waiting for?" she teases.
The beat chugs in the background as synths play with Spears' sex-kitten delivery of lines like "Watch me move/ When I lose, when I lose it hard/ Get you off with a touch/ Dancing in the dark.
"See the sunlight/ We ain't stopping/ Keep on dancing till the world ends/ If you feel it/ Let it happen/ Keep on dancing till the world ends," she sings as the song breaks down, fading out for a brief moment (revealing her signature breathiness), and then coming back in as she repeats those final lines again to close the song.
Ke$ha recently dished about the track to Spin.com, noting that it is about the power of an artist performing a great gig. "That song is me imagining her and any female musician touring the world," she said. "You know, when you go out, and you're having an amazing, magical night and you don't want to go to sleep and you want it to last until the world ends."
"Till the World Ends" is the second single from Femme Fatale, set to drop March 29. Its lead single, "Hold It Against Me," was an equally club-friendly jam by Luke and Martin, who are overseeing production on the album.

Mobile torrenting: how to manage and stream downloads from your phone
Still, just because you run your BitTorrent client on your desktop, laptop, or NAS, doesn't mean that you can't manage your torrents while on the move! If you see a poster for Pioneer One during your daily commute, you can whip out your smartphone and add the latest episode to your at-home torrent client.
And again, while it isn't wise to torrent on your smartphone, you can send a file from your PC to your phone; you can even stream a TV show, movie or song from home to your mobile device.
In this guide we'll cover Windows, Mac and Linux on the PC side of things, and Android, iOS, Symbian, BlackBerry, and Web apps on the mobile side. Color vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhere
Of course, such a hack isn't illegal as such -- every photo you take with Color is public. With FakeLocation you are simply circumventing Color's very limited location-oriented security mechanism. It does undermine Color's usefulness (and uniqueness), though -- if nefarious types can sit in their bedroom or basement and eavesdrop on classy dinner parties and wild night club soirees, people might be less inclined to share personal photos with those around them.
Fortunately, both for Color and its users, this is an easy security hole to plug -- at least in the short term. The app (or server-side) code simply checks to see if the user has 'teleported' an impossibly large distance, without any intermediate steps in between. In the long term, though, Color's users must be aware that its social graph is completely public. Color's users must realize that every photo they upload is visible by anyone, from any place.
After the break, just to elucidate a little on Color's actual business model and ultimate intention, we have two amazing quotes from Bill Nguyen, Color's founder.Continue reading Color vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhereColor vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhere originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 05:36:00 EST. Google Chrome slated for bloat removal
Now, however, Google is starting to take a look at where Chrome can be slimmed down. A special group of Chromium developers has been assembled and tasked with reducing the size of the Chrome binaries. While Windows is the primary target, it's likely that Mac and Linux versions will be looked at as well.
Various reasons for the "diet" are put forward by developers. Ian Fette notes that Chrome is delivered as part of several app bundles (like Avast) and larger binaries can cause difficulties. He also points out that Google sees an increased number of failed download attempts as the file size grows. Another developer, Lei Zhang, reminds that not everyone in the world has broadband -- and even a few megs here and there can make a big difference to those users.
A monitoring system has been put in place, and developers will now made made aware of increases in size as the Chromium buildbot churns out new snapshots.Google Chrome slated for bloat removal originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 15:00:00 EST. Katie Holmes Insists: Suri?s Fine!
Katie, who stars in the flick, snacked away during the swanky event, where she didn't seem bothered in the least by recent criticism of her laid-back parenting style -- which included taking her 4-year-old daughter to New York dessert spot Serendipity 3 at midnight on March 15 for ice cream sundaes. Microsoft buys 666,624 IPv4 addresses from Nortel for $7.5 million
Microsoft ponied up $7.5 million for the Nortel pool, which works out to just over $11 per IP address. There were reportedly 13 other interested buyers, but only Microsoft and three others actually submitted bids.
With the last block of IPv4 addresses already issued, snatching up 2/3 of a million in one fell swoop is a smart move by Microsoft, and we're sure they have plans for the IPs. As far as what those plans actually are, we'll just have to wait and see -- though something cloud-based seems like a safe bet.Microsoft buys 666,624 IPv4 addresses from Nortel for $7.5 million originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 08:00:00 EST. Firefox 4 now available to download, official release tomorrow
Despite what we reported last week, there was an unexpected (and unannounced) RC2 released on March 18. The final release build seems to have followed quickly after on Saturday, March 19. The official launch of Firefox 4 is due tomorrow.
Firefox 4 brings with it a slew of new features, including, most notably, a completely overhauled user interface that makes it look a lot like Chrome, but hardware acceleration and the jet-powered JaegerMonkey JavaScript engine also jostle for center stage. In true Mozilla style, Firefox 4 also brings support for many emerging standards, such as HTML5, CSS3 and WebGL. Finally, there are neat features like built-in Sync, restartless add-ons, and workspace management with Panorama.
For more information about Firefox 4, check our complete guide. We also have a fine selection of Firefox 4's finest restartless add-ons.
Update: Mozilla has asked us to say that this might not turn out to be the actual final build. It's still going through QA right now, and something might come up. Don't worry though: your browser will automatically update if a new build is released.
There are also some exciting goodies planned for tomorrow, and Mozilla doesn't want us to satisfy your Firefox 4 hunger just yet. Basically, if you want to enjoy the 'true Firefox 4' experience (including the pretty first-run splash screen), you should hold off installing until it's released tomorrow.

Blockbuster to Shut Down 186 Locations By April
Let it Slide is an engaging, difficult puzzle game
The idea is very simple, and far from original: You get a board with pieces arranged in a particular pattern; you have to slide those around until you get the special piece into its target location.
It's not even about finding out where the target location is - you can just hover over "dim tiles" and instantly see where you're supposed to bring the special piece. But getting it there is a whole different story.
There are five tutorial levels, which I strongly recommend you do. Then there are twenty "beginner" levels, but that's really a misnomer. If those are the beginner levels, I don't want to know what the intermediate and advanced levels look like!
Every time you finish a level you get a score based on how many clicks it took you - each level has a "par" (the minimum number of clicks it could be completed in), and your performance is compared to that gold standard. Because it's such a brainy game, getting it right is quite satisfying. I was downright proud of myself when I managed to finish a few levels. All in all, quite recommended, especially if you've got a few minutes of quiet. It might actually help you focus better later on.Let it Slide is an engaging, difficult puzzle game originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 17:00:00 EST. Field Notes from a Wine Life ? Junk Food Edition
Pizza in the Crosshairs
If you’re a foodie you like wine. If you’re a wine enthusiast you appreciate good food. Regardless of which side you lean, you appreciate the other side. And, in my estimation, the common ground for wine enthusiasts and foodies is pizza.
I’ve never met a single person who couldn’t wax philosophic about their favorite pie. From New York thin crust to Chicago deep-dish to California-style gourmet pies, everybody loves pizza. And, pizza, in a foodie society that rightfully denounces our Fast Food Nation, generally gets a hall pass. It’s like M&M’s. The locavore/whole foods/white table cloth person who swears to never eat junk food will bottom out a bowl of M&M’s, right? The same thing happens with the foodie and their favorite pie.
Yet, despite the wino/foodie familial alignment, a distressful situation happened a couple of weeks ago: On January 31, the USDA released the 2010, “Dietary Guidelines for Americans.” In typical, “Good enough for government” fashion, the 2010 guidelines were released in 2011, and noted in not so subtle terms that pizza is public enemy #1 in battling the near epidemic levels of obesity and diabetes in the US.
Ahem. I liked it better when the devil’s spawn was McDonald’s and not the staff of life … a slice of ‘za.
Aside from the truly scary fact that pizza is the number two source of calories for kids aged 2-18 (link initiates download of the entire report), it seems that pizza has everything that is bad for us – saturated and solid fats, sodium, added sugar and refined grains.
All I can say is I’m glad I’m on the wine side of the foodie/wino equation because Resveratrol, the little wine miracle compound, has been shown to have great potential in reducing obesity and diabetes. So, to the USDA and Obama’s Victory Garden I say, “I’m in your corner more often than not, but don’t demonize pizza, my man. All things in moderation, and paired with a nice red.”
You can read the Dietary Guidelines at this link. Mark Bittman and his book Food Matters is the antidote (if you’re interested) and Resveratrol research is as prevalent as pizza joints in the suburbs.
Speaking of Junk Food
Palate training for a wine enthusiast is a process that is fraught with challenge. No two people are necessarily going to get the same secondary or third-level notes on the same glass of wine so training is often a singular pursuit measured by much trial and error – bottle after bottle of wine, an aroma list by varietal and many tasting notes cross-referenced against a wine critic whose palate you respect.
But, what if you trained your palate not with wine, but with a soda and what if you knew the list of ingredients so you could test your palate in a quantifiable manner?
I saw an NPR news report earlier this week that noted the proprietary recipe for Coca-Cola was revealed in a 1979 Atlanta Journal-Constitution article. With the republished recipe, the NPR report isn’t so much news as it is a consumer interest piece – secret recipes the likes of the Colonel’s 11 secret spices or the 23 flavors in a Dr. Pepper always garnering attention.
The recipe itself is a bit of an aha moment for those that grew up in a Coke household, as I did – allowed one glass of Coke a day. Containing a number of essential oils, a glass of Coke and a review against the alleged recipe allows for a simple palate test, as I did yesterday.
Give it a try. I wouldn’t use a fountain Coke, but any old bottle from the convenience store will do, probably better if you go to a Mexican grocery store to get the version with pure cane sugar for purity of flavors.
I picked up the lime juice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and Neroli which is similar to orange peel, offering an orange-tinged bitter note in my own palate exercise. The lemon oil presented itself on the latter portion of the mid-palate. Though, coriander and vanilla eluded me. How will you do?
The alleged original Coke recipe (from NPR at this link):
Fluid extract of Coca 3 drams USP
Citric acid 3 oz
Caffeine 1 oz
Sugar 30 (qty. unclear)
Water 2.5 gal
Lime juice 2 pints
Vanilla 1 oz
Caramel 1.5 oz or more to colour
7X flavour (use 2 oz of flavour to 5 gals syrup):
Alcohol 8 oz
Orange oil 20 drops
Lemon oil 30 drops
Nutmeg oil 10 drops
Coriander 5 drops
Neroli 10 drops
Cinnamon 10 drops

Microsoft shuts down spam behemoth Rustock, reduces worldwide spam by 39%
Rustock, at its peak, was a botnet of around 2 million spam-sending zombies capable of sending out 30 billion spam email per day. Microsoft's wholesale slaughter of Rustock could reduce worldwide spam output by up to 39%.
Rustock was taken down, piece by piece, in a similar way to the Mega-D botnet. First the master controllers, the machines that send out commands to enslaved zombies, were identified. Microsoft quickly seized some of these machines located in the U.S. for further analysis, and worked with police in the Netherlands to disable some of the command structure outside of the U.S.Continue reading Microsoft shuts down spam behemoth Rustock, reduces worldwide spam by 39%Microsoft shuts down spam behemoth Rustock, reduces worldwide spam by 39% originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 07:05:00 EST. Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her 'Crazy' Led Zeppelin Covers
Mary J. Blige
Photo: MTV News
You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.
In early February, reports began circulating that Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven," working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her Stronger With Each Tear album, due Monday.
But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering another Zeppelin classic — the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the Essence Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.
"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' — it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."
Blige also said she recorded another new song — a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" — for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.
"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.

After Lately: Flushed Out
Z-Type is a fun way to learn to touch type
It's a basic shooter game: Spaceships come at you from the top, and you need to shoot and destroy them before they hit the bottom and destroy you. You do the shooting by typing the words associated with the baddies: Each spaceship has one word, and every letter sends a shot aimed at it. Once you finish typing the word, the ship explodes.
The graphics are very nice, and when you're done with the game it shows you your score and accuracy. The only thing I didn't like about this game is that it wouldn't let me set the speed, and it seems to be aimed at novice typists. If I could just select the level of difficulty before starting to play, I suspect it would have been much more engaging.
Still, for novice typists it's a great little way to practice!
