BlackBerry Curve 8980 shows up in FCC, offers some glam shots

Despite the more recent releases of the Curve 8500 series and the Curve 3G, RIM has never really offered up a true successor to the venerable Curve 8900 -- a device some would argue remains the prettiest that Waterloo has ever manufactured. Indeed, with the QVGA display and meager cam on the 3G, there's a pretty magnificent gap between it and the business-class Bold 9700 / 9780... so we're pretty excited to see a new model called the Curve 8980 get FCC approval. Oh, and what's more, the filing's now got access to a user's manual and external shots where you can definitely picture this as being a proper optical pad-equipped follow-on to the 8900 of old, complete with a 3.2 megapixel cam with flash and -- if we had to guess -- a high-res display adopted either from the 9780 or the 8900. No word on a release, but here's the kicker: as far as we can tell from the filing, it's EDGE-only just like the device it replaces, which is pretty inexcusable for a device that'd presumably be released in 2011. Add 3G, though, and they've got a desperately-needed new model to slot in underneath the Bold.BlackBerry Curve 8980 shows up in FCC, offers some glam shots originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 12:59:00 EDT. Nook Color finds its roots? Angry Birds say yes

We already knew the Nook Color was capable of something a bit more than its initial offering, having seen Angry Birds run fairly smoothly on a dev unit. In fact, it's exactly what we want in between chapters of Animal Farm, and the xda-developers community, right on schedule, are providing pictorial evidence of its rooting conquests. So far we've seen the aforementioned game / addiction, a few other additions to the extras menu, and even Launcher Pro (image after the break). NookDevs has a page going with instructions, but even it admits to being a work in progress, so we're gonna emphasis a little stronger than usual: don't try this at home unless you're absolutely sure what you're doing -- or don't mind a broken tablet or two.

Content ratings now live in the Android Market developers' console

The Android Market's new content rating system is now live in the developer's console. From here on out, any new or updated applications will be required to choose from Mature, Teen, Pre-Teen and All. While ratings ultimately are the responsibility of the developers, Google has given a set of guidelines that must be followed. Apps that include references to Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs, as well as violence (cartoon, fantasy or otherwise) shall be labeled "Mature." Same goes for sexual or suggestive content. Porn still isn't allowed. A app that includes inflammatory content, profanity and crude humor,  that may offend users should be rated "Teen" or "Mature." Here's where it gets a little interesting: Apps that ask users for their location at any point must not be rated "All." Apps that "ask to access course or fine location data" are "Pre-Teen." Any app that can publish your location should be rated "Teen" or "Mature." Users will be able to flag apps that they believe are incorrectly rated, and Google will take a look. Repeat offenders can be "subject to further action," says Google, up to and including killing the dev account. We're not seeing ratings on apps in the Market just yet, but you know they're coming.Content ratings now live in the Android Market developers' console posted originally by Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories

Microsoft offers stability update for Internet Explorer 9 Beta

Microsoft has offered up the first Internet Explorer 9 patch via Windows Update. KB2448827 is all about improving reliability and stability, and you should be able to find it on your Update screen by clicking through to view optional updates (or by navigating to Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Select updates to install in Explorer). It's a little odd to see Microsoft do this -- they're typically not big on delivering patches to beta apps the way competitors like Google and Mozilla do. Perhaps there's a paradigm shift underway in Redmond.

If you're looking for some real IE9-related excitement, the recently-leaked Internet Explorer 9 beta 2 (which may, in fact, be an RC build) might be more up your alley. It's floating around the usual places you find 'community releases' of Microsoft apps.Microsoft offers stability update for Internet Explorer 9 Beta originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST. Adobe releases single-file cumulative patch for Acrobat 9

Yes, Acrobat and Flash are two of the most-exploited pieces of software out there today, but Adobe has done a much better job of responding to security concerns in 2010. Patches are more frequent, and major improvements have been rolled out -- like the sandboxing which was added in Acrobat and Reader X.

Still, there are always people who can't -- for one reason or another -- install an update like Reader X. Adobe recognizes that, and they've decided to make it easy for administrators to deliver all the necessary patches for Acrobat 9 in one fell swoop. The single file patch currently includes 12 updates for version 9, and Adobe's Joel Geraci states that the company will add any future updates to the file. The company plans on offering the same type of patch file for Reader X.

Add a signature in gmail

Adding a signature to your e-mail -- especially when you're working from a smartphone -- can be either a badge of honor, or an excuse. (The joke goes that you can get away with typo after typo so long as your signature says "Sent from my iPhone.) Adding a signature in your Android smartphone's gmail account is easy. Fire up ye olde gmail application. Press the menu button. Choose "More." Choose "Settings." Tap "Signature." Type the snarky statement of your choice. Click OK. Send e-mail. Signatures don't have to (and probably shouldn't be) full of snark, but they can be handy to let the recipient know that you're working from a phone, and so the response might not be as long as it would be if you were working from a desktop. Typos are still on you, however.  Add a signature in gmail posted originally by Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories

BlackBerry Empathy design concept feels bad that you're stuck using a BlackBerry

Rest easy, folks: we know it's pointy at the bottom, but we've been assured this isn't the BlackBerry 7100's true successor. Instead, the so-called Empathy is the bizarre outcome of of a RIM-sponsored design project at the Art Center College of Design that touts its ability to detect the emotions of its user and his or her contacts. It's not exactly clear how it'd do that, but one crucial element is the biometric feedback ring that communicates your frustration at the phone's inability to properly sync IMAP accounts in real time. All of this anger and joy is displayed on a social map -- colored rings indicate your contacts' previous and current emotional states -- which is presented on a full touchscreen that can become transparent when the phone's not in use. Prefer the Bold to the Storm, do you? Turn the phone around, and boom, you've got one of the scariest looking portrait QWERTY keyboards the world has ever seen. We don't really anticipate seeing this chiseled slab of bleeding-heart technology in RIM's lineup any time soon... but we can definitely see the benefit to knowing when your BBM contacts are ready to put a fist through a wall. Follow the break for video.Continue reading BlackBerry Empathy design concept feels bad that you're stuck using a BlackBerryBlackBerry Empathy design concept feels bad that you're stuck using a BlackBerry originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 19:01:00 EDT. Harvard scientists reverse aging in mice, laugh maniacally at human possibilities

The reversal of aging has been one of the great dreams of humanity, but it seems like our rodent overlords have beat us to it. The Harvard Medical School has demonstrated "a dramatic reversal" in the aging process when reintroducing the enzyme telomerase into old and feeble mice. What happened was that their naturally worn out organs started to regenerate, instead of degenerating further, bringing them back to a youthful state of health. Sadly, while the results of this study are hugely important, there are a couple of caveats to make: firstly, the mice in question were genetically modified to suffer from a lack of telomerase, which might have inflated the results of the tests relative to regular mice, but more importantly, an increase in telomerase in humans is "a hallmark of most human cancers." So, if you want a shot of Benjamin Button brew, you'll have to be very patient indeed. For now, let's just be happy that Algernon and his buddies have found their fountain of youth.

Osram's new LED package 50 percent brighter, promises cameraphone flashes that suck 50 percent less

See those smiling twentysomethings up there? That, folks, is the kind of happiness that can only be achieved with 150 glorious lux of LED intensity. Fortunately, Siemens subsidiary Osram Opto Semiconductors has packaged a new LED chip that capable of putting up such impressive figures, a claimed 50 percent brighter than its predecessor -- and that makes it capable of evenly illuminating a 90-centimeter area from a distance of one meter away. Cameraphone flashes are an obvious application, but pocket projectors are another obvious benefactor -- it's nearly impossible to eke enough light out of 'em, and this should help. It's not clear whether a brighter pocket projector would have the same positive effect on the demeanor of a bunch of stylish youths, though -- more on that situation as we get it.Osram's new LED package 50 percent brighter, promises cameraphone flashes that suck 50 percent less originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 28 Nov 2010 02:02:00 EDT. DownThemAll, Firefox's best download manager, now multi-lingual

In just three weeks, DownThemAll! version 2 has moved from supporting just one language in beta 4, to 14 languages in beta 5. Well, kind of -- the Japanese option is "English," and American English is much the same thing. But still, the addition of any new languages is sure to please its millions of users.

If you currently use Firefox 3.6 and DTA 1.1, version 2 represents a massive and awesome overhaul to Firefox's best download manager. Speed limits (global, per server, and per download) are implemented; private browsing is supported; HTML5 video and audio tags are supported; the UI is cleaner, faster, ... and the list goes on. For more details, Lee covered most of the significant changes of DTA 2.0 back in May.

Google's HTML5 e-book begins to appear in newspapers

In yesterday's copy of the Los Angeles Times, a print version of Google's new 20 Things e-book has been found. The clipping relates to the Cloud Computing chapter of the book, but the chapter number doesn't match up.

This is an obvious, and genius step for Google. Not only are they capitalizing on the book's great illustrations, but they're also dragging the untechnological masses kicking and screaming into the HTML5 future. The reader sees the print advertisement, loads up the website... and sees an e-book that looks just like a real book!

Less obvious, but more impressive, is the fact that Google isn't pushing Chrome as the only choice of modern browser. The 'What Browser?' site that the e-book points to features a Windowsesque 'Browser Ballot', with Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera all being shuffled randomly.

It looks as if Google might be taking a leaf from Microsoft's Beauty of the Web book. Looking at the bigger picture, an up-to-date Web is infinitely more powerful and interesting than a crusty and antiquated Web. Everyone stands to gain from an HTML5-enabled Web, including Google.Filed under: Google, web 2.0, BrowsersGoogle's HTML5 e-book begins to appear in newspapers originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 06:15:00 EST. SiteLauncher for Chrome lets you jump to sites using a single keystroke

Back in 2008, Lee covered SiteLauncher for Firefox. It's a simple add-on that provides you with a customizable "shortcut panel" for your favorite websites. SiteLauncher for Chrome provides basically the same service, but for Google's browser. I've been using it for a few days now, and while it's not perfect, it's still very handy.
Pros: When it works, it really does provide single-keystroke access to the sites I need. Ctrl+Space and then d can take me to Download Squad. I like it. It's very customizable. You can create and delete groups, move sites from group to group, etc. The hotkey assignment GUI is well thought-out. You can see at a glance what hotkeys are already used.
Cons: It doesn't always work. Sometimes I hit Ctrl+Space and nothing happens. That's mainly when the address bar ("Omnibar") is in focus, and I suspect it's due to Chrome's limitations. Still, it's annoying. It's one of those add-ons that takes some getting used to, but once you're addicted, you want to use it all the time. Having it work intermittently just keeps the habit from forming.
Okay, that was just one con -- but it's a big one!
Bottom line: Awesome add-on, if only it worked all the time.Filed under: BrowsersSiteLauncher for Chrome lets you jump to sites using a single keystroke originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 27 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST. Firefox Friday: a round-up of this week's Firefox releases and news

Stop! Stop your Friday afternoon it's-only-two-hours-until-weekend procrastination! Focus on this tab for just a moment because I have a lot to tell you. We've covered so much Firefox news this week that you can't possibly have read it all. You need this round-up like you need a Friday beer.

Enough waffling... let's rock.

Firefox 4 Beta 7 has been released for Windows, Mac and Linux

Almost two months late, Mozilla finally squeezed out the first feature-complete Firefox 4 Beta. Beyond the fact that FF4 has a staggering number of new features, it's not clear why the browser is slipping so behind schedule. Still, if everything goes to plan, we should see three more beta releases followed by a release candidate around February or March.

If you haven't yet tried out Firefox 4, now's the time to take it for a spin. There are still plenty of rough edges, but my guide should walk you through most of the cool new features. Most importantly, thanks to the inclusion of a suped-up JavaScript engine in this new build, you'll quickly notice that FF4 is now as fast as Google Chrome.Continue reading Firefox Friday: a round-up of this week's Firefox releases and newsFiled under: Mozilla, BrowsersFirefox Friday: a round-up of this week's Firefox releases and news originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. An early look at Winamp for Android's SHOUTcast integration

This morning, I was fortunate enough to get a sneak peek at an alpha version of Winamp for Android. The beta version currently available from the Android Market is already a lot better than other media players, but judging by what I've seen today, it's going to get even better.

For this alpha build, Nullsoft has focused on SHOUTcast integration. The implementation is still a little rough around the edges, but it works -- it works really well. You can browse the top stations, and browse by genre or search term. Click a station to listen to it, or push-and-hold to add it to your favourites for easy access in the future. Presumably, if you listen to one station enough, it might be automatically added to your favorites, too. Rounding up the changes, there's 'My recent stations', which is exactly what it sounds like. For more details, check the gallery below.

Streaming radio for Android isn't exactly new, but this is by far the most easy-to-use and functional implementation that I've seen. You might point to Pandora, but not only is it only available to American users, it's simply not in the same league as SHOUTcast. At the time of writing there are 44,454 free SHOUTcast radio stations, and the Android app can listen to any single one of them. If you're not excited by that, let me know: I'll send some goons around to forcibly remove your smartphone.

[Download Squad and Nullsoft, the developers of Winamp, are both owned by AOL.]

Symbian Foundation axing websites on December 17th, source repositories available 'upon request'

We'd heard that the Symbian Foundation would undergo some drastic changes as it transitions to a licensing body, and here's number one -- every official Symbian website will be shuttered on the 17th of next month. That goes for every page from symbian.org down to the Symbian Twitter and Facebook feeds, and the source code itself will be shelved. If you want access to any of it, even the databases of user-generated bug reports, you'll have to ask the Foundation for a hard copy and pay a nominal media and shipping fee after January 31st. We're trying to reach Symbian right now to figure out the full repercussions of this move, but assuming Nokia's promise to keep Symbian open-source still rings true, you might want to start stashing away the repositories and setting up mirrors before the Foundation drops off the face of the web -- and perhaps the Symbian crowdsource community, too.Symbian Foundation axing websites on December 17th, source repositories available 'upon request' originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 27 Nov 2010 13:47:00 EDT. Acer to launch app store, will pre-load on PCs

Our pals over at Engadget covered the Acer hullabaloo this morning, and there's one bit which blipped on the Download Squad radar. Yes, software aficionados, Acer is launching an app and content store.

It'll be called Alive, and you can't really blame Acer for the move -- they're a top-3 manufacturer selling millions of laptops and desktops every year. The opportunity to glean a few percentage points in commission for selling an app or album could amount to a significant revenue stream. Plus, there's the 'we're providing a convenience for our customers' angle. To the average computer user, finding, downloading, and installing quality apps remains a bit of a mystery. Microsoft launches new casual games hub that connects MSN, Bing and Live

Using the consummate magic of Facebook Connect (or Windows Live ID), users of Microsoft's game portals can now stay in touch with their friends while they play Bejeweled thanks to a 'casual games hub.'

From what I can see, this games hub takes the form of a 'dashboard' that wraps around each of the games, whether you play them on MSN Games, Bing or Live Messenger. Take a look at the screenshot above -- it's the only real way to explain how it works. You can now challenge your friends to games or see their high scores while you game. You can also see your News Feed -- pretty convenient if you're not the type that keeps Facebook open in a tab 24/7.

To accommodate all of these changes MSN Games has been completely overhauled. It's now rather beautiful! (Does anyone remember how it used to look back when it was called 'Zone'? Those were the days...) Oh, there's also a 30-second unskippable pre-roll video commercial before you can play each game -- is that new?

Live Messenger has also been updated, according to the screenshots at LiveSide. No one at Download Squad is seeing the changes yet, however -- but perhaps the patch will come tonight!Filed under: Games, Microsoft, Social SoftwareMicrosoft launches new casual games hub that connects MSN, Bing and Live originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 11:30:00 EST. Pirate Bay founders lose appeal: jail time reduced, fines raised

It's been a while since the four Pirate Bay founders lost their case in a Stockholm district court -- April 2009, to be more precise. The verdict was of course appealed, but alas, it was not to be. A Swedish appeals court has upheld the original ruling but changed the sentencing. Three of the quartet have had their jail time reduced: Fredrik Neij gets ten months, Peter Sunde eight months, and Carl Lundstrom four (Gottfrid Svartholm was too ill at the time of the hearing; his "criminal liability" will be determined later, according to BBC News). The fine, however, has been upped from the original 30 million kronor to 46 million (US $6.4m). Toshiba TG01 slowly, surely gets hacked to run Android

It's easy to forget about the TG01 nowadays, but bear in mind that Toshiba's WinMo beast from last year was the first production phone in the world to use Qualcomm Snapdragon silicon. Oh, and it was under 10mm thick and featured a 4.1-inch WVGA display at a time when such specs were basically science fiction -- so you've got to give credit where credit's due. Anyhow, the phone's far from obsolete -- apart from that little WinMo issue, that is, so the good folks on xda-developers have started the time-honored tradition of transplanting Android onto it. Important stuff still isn't working (the lack of calling capability is a big one for us, personally) but we're guessing it's just a matter of time before we see a solid, usable build in the wild now. Hyperscaling Without Hyperventilating

Scaling a website up to the size of a Twitter or a Facebook brings its own set of problems. These problems aren't a reflection of those that crop up on moderately large sites -- they're unique to these massive, hyperscale systems. Luke, I am your smartphone (video)

NTT DoCoMo recently launched the Samsung Galaxy S in the Japanese market and now we've come to discover that it's chosen a very forceful personality to represent the product to its discerning audience. Darth "roundabound" Vader has been starring in the carrier's latest round of "always with you" ads, wherein he serves as a (sort of) human representation of the phone, thus lending some anthropomorphic qualities to the cold slab of technology awaiting you in the shops. This whole outlandish idea really shouldn't work, but somehow it does -- we want a little Vader in our lives too now.

That's seriously going to cut into their Black Friday shopping plans, but hey, we know a great way to pick up the Adobe suite. Well, maybe not.Pirate Bay founders lose appeal: jail time reduced, fines raised originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Nov 2010 19:39:00 EDT. AAXA debuts L1 v2: world's smallest 20 lumen pico projector

The pico projector may have peaked a year or so ago, but AAXA Technologies is hoping to ride the coattails of success with the L1 v2. Predictably, this is the second generation L1, and it's being hailed as the world's smallest 20 lumen pico projector at 4.2- x 2.1- x 1.2-inches. Other specs include a native 800 x 600 resolution, on-board gamma correction, an inbuilt media player capable of decoding a slew of file formats, an LCoS imager, a USB socket and an internal battery good for 1.5 hours of use. We're told that it can blast images up to 50-inches in size, and while the $449 MSRP still stings, those who pre-order now can get in for $399. Not exactly a Black Friday special, but hey...Continue reading AAXA debuts L1 v2: world's smallest 20 lumen pico projectorFiled under: DisplaysAAXA debuts L1 v2: world's smallest 20 lumen pico projector originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Nov 2010 13:10:00 EDT. Hacker gets native code to run on Windows Phone 7 -- will a jailbreak follow?

It seems, thanks to one of Samsung's recent additions to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, that a jailbreak of Microsoft's latest mobile platform might come a lot sooner than anticipated.

In a high-tech plot twist that even mother could've predicted, it turns out that Windows Phone 7 can run native code! Until today, it was thought that WP7 apps could only be written in Silverlight, an abstracted platform that made jailbreaking all but impossible. If third-party apps can contain native code, it makes jailbreaking all but a foregone conclusion. There still remains the problem of getting such apps onto your phone, though: Microsoft isn't going to approve the addition of a jailbreaking app on the Marketplace!

Microsoft's acceptance of Samsung's native app raises one other important question: why can Samsung submit a native app, but small-time indie developers can't? Samsung's app obviously required some functionality that only native, low-level code could provide -- but why shouldn't all developers get the ability to hook into the underlying operating system?

As Long Zheng says, for a phone's indie and homebrew community to really thrive, unfettered access to the phone's hardware is required. Let's hope this is just the beginning of WP7 hacking!Filed under: Windows Mobile, MicrosoftHacker gets native code to run on Windows Phone 7 -- will a jailbreak follow? originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. Four Facebook Alternative Alternatives

Now that Diaspora, which is building an open-source distributed social network, has launched in private alpha, I figured it'd be a good idea to remind you that there are several alternatives to that particular Facebook alternative, some of which have been around longer and in more advanced stages of development.

Note that there may be more initiatives that I haven't heard of or simply didn't or forgot to mention, so this is by no means an exhaustive list. Also, all of these deserve a full review, so I refrained from making quick-and-dirty comparisons between all of them.

Jing, the all-in-one screen capture and recording tool from TechSmith, reviewed

TechSmith, with the launch of Snagit more than 20 years ago, is the definitive veteran of screen capture technology. Camtasia Studio, launched almost 10 years later, is now at version 7.1 and remains the best screen recording and video editing suite out there. TechSmith's latest tool, however, is an interesting mix of both Snagit and Camtasia. It's called Jing, and it makes sharing screenshots and screen recordings a total breeze.

Jing, at its most basic, lets you take perfect screenshots. You can drag a selection box around the target area, or let it snap to the current window. It's not as customizable as Snagit or Screenpresso, but it's definitely good enough.

When you probe a little deeper, however, Jing becomes a lot more interesting. Instead of taking a screenshot of a selected area or window, you can hit the 'Capture video' button and immediately start recording.

But it gets even better! Jing can automatically upload your screenshots and videos to TechSmith's Screencast.com site.Continue reading Jing, the all-in-one screen capture and recording tool from TechSmith, reviewedJing, the all-in-one screen capture and recording tool from TechSmith, reviewed originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 13:00:00 EST. Scraper for Chrome lets you easily create spreadsheets from Web data

Scraping is a technique whereby a website or tool extracts select information from another website. For example, when you type a difficult word into Google and instantly see a definition for that word from some Web dictionary, that's because Google "scraped" that information from the dictionary. The term (and practice) has some negative connotations, because scrapers can be used to steal blog content and for other nefarious purposes. But as Google (and many others) show, it doesn't have to be used for evil.
Scraper is a Chrome add-on that somewhat simplifies the process of scraping information from a webpage. I say "somewhat" because you still have to know XPath or jQuery selector syntax, but that's pretty easy to master if you know a bit of HTML.
Once the extension is installed, you can right-click any page element and select "Scrape similar". You then get a window with a single table row, and the XPath expression leading to the exact element you've selected. It is now up to you to generalize that expression so as to get a broader match. As you can see in the screenshot, it was quite simple to write an expression that yields all of the post headlines and links on the DLS homepage.
Once you have the information you wanted, you can click Export to Google Docs and get a spreadsheet with all of your data in tabular form, ready for further processing.
Scraper is very much a work in progress; while jQuery selector syntax is supported, you only get the XPath expression filled in automatically (and it's too specific). Also, it does not support saving expressions as templates, so every time you want to use it, you have to re-build the XPath expression you need. I'm sure this will all get fixed in due time.Filed under: Web services, GoogleScraper for Chrome lets you easily create spreadsheets from Web data originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 14:30:00 EST. When iPad 2 Hits, Will iPad 1 Go Cheap Or Extinct?

With iOS 4.2 finally out in the wild, the iPad has effectively beenrejuvenated. And there's no question that Apple is going to sell a massive amount of them during the Holiday shopping season. But what comes next? Well, the iPad 2, of course.

You don't need to be an analyst looking for inside information to know that Apple has a pretty standard policy of refreshing their product lines about once a year. And with iOS devices, it's more or less clockwork. Since the iPad was released in early April last year, that's the most obvious target for when the iPad 2 will hit. But there's a side question that will go along with that launch: what will happen to the iPad 1? Will it go cheap? Or will it go extinct?

Dogfight 2 is an engaging, challenging Time-Waster

When I first looked at Dogfight 2, it didn't appear all that exciting. You have to shoot down the other planes - big deal, right?
But then the game started, and I really got into it! Gameplay is fantastic! The fact that it's a side-view game made me think that it would be just a simple shoot 'em up, but it isn't like that at all. At each level, you only have a few enemies and the field doesn't continuously scroll. Your enemies doggedly pursue you and you have to execute all sorts of crazy acrobatic maneuvers to get behind them and stay on their tail while you shoot them out of the sky.
One shot isn't enough, by the way -- you need to hit each enemy several times before it goes down. However, it's not one of those games where you just keep the trigger constantly depressed and spray a hail of bullets all over the place. You need to focus: fly first, shoot second.
You also receive points for acrobatic tricks, such as executing a nose dive and getting out alive, or flying extra-high. Later levels require dropping bombs on targets (such as a heavily-guarded zeppelin). It's quite an intense game!Filed under: Fun, Games, Time-WastersDogfight 2 is an engaging, challenging Time-Waster originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 13:00:00 EST. Review: The Viewsonic 10-inch gTablet

Is Tegra 2 on a sub-$500 tablet too good to be true? The gTablet is Viewsonic's entry into the sub-$500 Android tablet market.  While there won't be any shortage of cheap Android tablets, readers, and toasters (we have to beat the PreCentral guys in the race for the first smart toaster!) come this Friday, a few stick out hardware-wise, and the gTablet is one of them.  Just so happens that I got a few days of one-on-one time with a gTablet, so what better way to play with it than to give it a quick review.Normally, none of us here would dare review a device we haven't put through the paces, but this one's a bit different, because this is much more useful before Black Friday than it would be after.  Hit the break to see the whirlwind review of the gTabet. WorkFlowy is a lightweight outliner endorsed by Matt Cutts

WorkFlowy is deceptively simple. It's just an outliner - a list-maker! You click on a new line, write whatever you have to write, and hit Enter. Done - you now have a bullet, a "to-do item," or whatever you want to call it. Hit Shift+Enter, and you can add some text as a note for that item.
There is nothing revolutionary about it, except for one key difference: it lets you drill into items. By "drilling in," I mean that you can click the bullet next to an item (or press Ctrl+right arrow), and you're then transported "into" the item. You no longer see the whole list - the item you've selected becomes the "master item," and it looks like it's the top of the hierarchy.
This simple difference makes it possible to forget that you have a huge list of other items. It makes it possible to use Workflowy for managing a whole bunch of disparate projects, thoughts, and whatnot. Workflowy was intentionally kept simple -- there are no "tags." You can't send links to specific items. There are no collaboration features. It's a very single-minded tool, and it just works.
I've promised you Matt Cutts in the title, so here's what Mr. Cutts had to say about it, according to WorkFlowy's homepage:
"Workflowy has become one of three tabs that I keep open in my browser, along with Gmail and Google Calendar."
That's a powerful endorsement if I've ever seen one. There's also a short video about Workflowy after the jump.Continue reading WorkFlowy is a lightweight outliner endorsed by Matt CuttsFiled under: Utilities, ProductivityWorkFlowy is a lightweight outliner endorsed by Matt Cutts originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 14:30:00 EST. Gibson sues WowWee, retailers over Paper Jamz toy guitars; would rather some other company get all that free advertising (video)

It looks like WowWee is learning the implications of that old saw, "imitation is the surest way to get your company sued." That's right, the company's radical looking, fun for about twenty minutes, paper-thin plastic toy guitars have recently drawn legal fire from Gibson, who recognizes a distinct resemblance between some classic axes (like the Flying V and the Les Paul) and the aforementioned Paper Jamz line. Which we could certainly see -- even if WowWee hadn't name dropped Gibson in its product literature (which seems to us to be rather on par with taunting the company outright). And if that weren't bad enough, the company is going after retailers, such as Toys 'R Us and eBay, who it claimed kept selling the things after receiving a cease and desist letter. Of course, this raises a few questions: At which point is a design so ubiquitous that it becomes fair game for companies like WowWee? And wouldn't Gibson want the kiddies (who will be ready to move up to real guitars soon enough) hooked on their brand? And most importantly -- when are we getting a Paper Jamz Rickenbacker? Because there has to be an easier way to be like Paul Weller. Commercial after the break (it adds nothing to the post, but it's kind of a laugh).Continue reading Gibson sues WowWee, retailers over Paper Jamz toy guitars; would rather some other company get all that free advertising (video)Gibson sues WowWee, retailers over Paper Jamz toy guitars; would rather some other company get all that free advertising (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 18:21:00 EDT. StoreSlider lets you quickly search through eBay

While eBay's built-in search is certainly handy, it's not very visual. StoreSlider provides a thumbnail-laden alternative. You select a category, enter a couple of keywords, choose a sorting order, and bam! tons of auctions pop up, each with a large, pretty image.
You can also select the sorting order (Best match, Ending soonest, etc. - same options as on eBay), and filter by "Buy it Now" items or items with free delivery only. The "free delivery" is a tad sketchy; the site won't let you specify where you're located, so I suspect it's free delivery in the US only.
It's basically very similar to eBay's own search, but it's more visual and perhaps a tad faster. Another bonus is that you never have to click Next to load up more results. You just keep scrolling down, and more results are automatically loaded.
All in all, it's nothing revolutionary, but if you need to quickly review what eBay has to offer in a certain category, this is one viable search option -- and it does look nice.Filed under: Business, UtilitiesStoreSlider lets you quickly search through eBay originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST. Internet Explorer 9 preview 7 available, takes SunSpider crown; Beta now downloaded 13 million times

As of a few moments ago, you can now download Platform Preview 7 of Internet Explorer 9. The main focus of this update is the continued enhancement of the Chakra JavaScript engine; as a result, IE9 now leads the SunSpider benchmark by a few percent.

Like its predecessors, this preview lacks any kind of useful UI -- but if you have the Beta installed, you can follow Lee's guide to hack the Beta UI onto the preview. The Beta, incidentally, has now been downloaded over 13 million times. We're not seeing significant use of IE9 amongst Download Squad readers, but with almost 4% of Ed Bott'z ZDNet readership using IE9, there's definitely some evidence of its growing popularity. With my sources indicating a January release of IE9, Microsoft really ought to release a second beta...

Anyway, in infinitely more exciting news, there's a bunch of cool new HTML5 demos on the Test Drive site to play around with! Shakespeare's Tag Cloud is very cute (and educational!) Galactic, on the other hand, is an excellent example of the 'Open Web' 3D games that we can expect to see next year. It also acts as a very good benchmark tool -- I may have to do another head-to-head browser shootout!

Update: I just tested IE9 on the 'real world' Kraken benchmark... and it beats Firefox!

Palm webOS 'Enyo' framework paves the way for tablets and larger phones (video)

Don't expect HP's webOS 2.0 to be tied to an HVGA screen for long -- come "early 2011," the company will introduce a number of "really interesting new form factors," including tablets and phones. That was the message driven home at Palm's Developer Day this year, according to PreCentral's Dieter Bohn, and the software that's going to make that shift possible is a little something called Enyo. Picking up where Ares left off, Enyo is a Javascript app framework with native hardware acceleration and faster app load times (they're allegedly down to one second now), but the part we think you'll be most interested in is the promise of apps that natively scale to multiple aspect ratios. HP's Scott Miles demoed it earlier this week by playing around with a tiny, single-pane portrait email application in the desktop version of Chrome... and then maximized the browser window to reveal a fully-functioning three-pane landscape layout suited for a large tablet screen. Representatives stressed that the email app was a proof of concept, but Enyo's here to stay, replacing the earlier Mojo starting in 2011 and slated to be available in early 2011 via developer SDK. Get introduced to Enyo in a video after the break, and skip ahead to that email demo at 15:55 if you're running late for your rockstar developer meetup.Continue reading Palm webOS 'Enyo' framework paves the way for tablets and larger phones (video)Palm webOS 'Enyo' framework paves the way for tablets and larger phones (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 21 Nov 2010 19:01:00 EDT. Nokia's former MeeGo chief confirms new role as Senior VP of webOS at HP

Ari Jaaksi, the former head of MeeGo Devices at Nokia, has confirmed reports from last month identifying HP as his new employer. According to the latest update to his LinkedIn profile, Ari is now enjoying the mild temperatures of the San Francisco Bay Area and does indeed hold the title of Senior Vice President at Hewlett-Packard. That in itself doesn't necessarily mean he's the new head honcho for webOS and Palm devices, but clicking on his "Company Website" link takes you to Palm.com, which should dispel any lingering doubts. So now that we know he'll be helping steer the HPalm ship, can we start sending Ari our mockups for the Pre 3 or what?Nokia's former MeeGo chief confirms new role as Senior VP of webOS at HP originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 20 Nov 2010 07:46:00 EDT. Switched On: Getting from Kno to yes, part 2

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

The last Switched On introduced the opportunity of the Kno tablet, which is in transiton from having a large hardware footprint to having a large customer footprint. Without question, the Kno hardware is an outlier, but could be simply a first salvo in a battle for digital textbooks that will take years to play out.

Look at the ironic development of e-readers. Today's LCD-based Nook Color would not exist if Sony and Amazon had not opened (and soothed) consumers' eyes with e-paper-based readers that were themselves an answer to an early generation of LCD-based products like the Rocket e-Book. The outlier shows the potential.Continue reading Switched On: Getting from Kno to yes, part 2Switched On: Getting from Kno to yes, part 2 originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 21 Nov 2010 17:30:00 EDT.
